*National Overview – Israel, 2006

This article is adapted from “Israel National Tour” 2006, which appeared in Wedding, D., & Stevens, M. J. (Eds). (2009). Psychology: IUPsyS Global Resource (Edition 2009) [CD-ROM]. International Journal of Psychology, 44 (Suppl. 1).

history

In Israel the first department of psychology was opened at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Academic specialties at five universities include clinical psychology, child clinical (education) psychology, social psychology, organizational psychology, rehabilitation psychology, experimental psychology, physiological psychology and cognitive psychology. The Israel Psychological Association is a partner in different legislative committees. The main contributions are the laws of mental ill and the law of youth (1995).

Research

Research is conducted mainly at the universities, Israel defense forces, and several public and private institutions. In 1984 the number of psychologists holding academic or other research positions was about two hundred.

Education

Five universities in Israel offer B.A. studies in psychology to about 350 students per year. After completion of the BA (3-4 years) students may register for M.A. studies with an option to continue later for the Ph.D. The M.A. studies require two academic years plus M.A. thesis (most students need an additional two years for that). About 100 psychologists are registered for post M.A. studies every year. After M.A graduation specialization is acquired by two years of work under the supervision on a full-time basis (or parallel period on a part-time basis). Licensure for work in psychology depends on the M.A. degree in psychology as a prerequisite and a state license examination in the field of specialization. Only a person holding such a license is entitled to render professional psychological services, including psychotherapy (if the license is obtained in clinical psychology). In Israel state licensing of psychologists was introduced in 1977.
